Michael McGoldrick, Dezi Donnelly, and Tim Edey:
Michael McGoldrick, born on November 26, 1971, in Manchester, England, is a pioneering figure in contemporary folk and traditional Irish music. Renowned for his mastery of the Irish flute, uilleann pipes, low whistles, and bodhrán, McGoldrick is also proficient in acoustic guitar, cittern, and mandolin. Growing up in a vibrant Irish music scene in Manchester, he began his musical journey at age 8 with the whistle, quickly excelling and winning numerous All-Ireland Championships by age 15. His early influences included local fiddlers and Irish legends, which shaped his innovative approach to music.
While still in school, McGoldrick co-founded the Celtic rock band Toss the Feathers, gaining recognition as an exceptional wind player. His career took off after winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Tradition Award in 1994, leading to the formation of groundbreaking bands like Flook! and Lúnasa. He later joined the legendary Scottish folk group Capercaillie and collaborated with the Afro Celt Sound System, blending Irish, African, and electronic influences. McGoldrick’s solo career showcases his talent for honoring traditional music while pushing its boundaries, with albums like “Morning Rory,” “Fused,” and “Wired” redefining the folk genre.
Dezi Donnelly, a Manchester-born fiddler, is celebrated for his fiery and passionate playing style. A cousin of Michael McGoldrick, Donnelly has been a prominent figure in the traditional Irish music scene since his youth. He has won multiple All-Ireland Championships and is known for his dynamic performances and technical prowess. Donnelly’s collaborations with McGoldrick, including the album “Champions of the North,” highlight their deep musical connection and shared heritage. His work with various bands and artists has cemented his reputation as one of the leading fiddlers in contemporary folk music.
Tim Edey, born in Broadstairs, England, is a multi-instrumentalist and composer known for his extraordinary skill on the guitar and melodeon. Edey’s versatility and innovative approach have earned him a place among the top folk musicians of his generation. He has performed with a wide range of artists, including The Chieftains, Sharon Shannon, and Lunasa, showcasing his ability to blend traditional and modern styles seamlessly. Edey’s solo work and collaborations have been critically acclaimed, with his album “Sailing Over the 7th String” receiving particular praise for its creativity and technical brilliance.
